Kansai job openings up 80 per cent, seekers 70 per cent: the changing face of Japan’s workplace

Between February and July 2011, recruiting experts Hays has experienced an 80 per cent increase in
the number of jobs registered in the Kansai region, and a 70 per cent increase in the number of
candidates looking for a new job in that region.

This redistribution of teams more widely across Japan, instead of concentrating them in Tokyo, is
changing the face of Japan’s workplace, according to Hays.

“In a survey we conducted earlier this year, we found that one in five companies has changed the way it
places personnel following the earthquake and its aftermath. One in four companies (28.5 per cent) also
responded that it is building its personnel base more widely across Japan, instead of concentrating on
Tokyo.

“This follow up survey reinforces that result, and the change has been most obvious in the Kansai region
– where jobs registered with us have spiked in the five months to July. At the same time, job seekers are
also looking further abroad for their next opportunity, and targeting the Kansai region,” says Christine
Wright, Managing Director of Hays in Japan.

“This candidate pool is not only made up of new entrants to the labour force. Career-changers are a
significant proportion of the overall number of job seekers. These career-changers are shrugging off the
mentality of lifetime employment by making a mid-career job change.

“These career-changers are very interested in opportunities in the Kansai region and are embracing the
concept of moving their careers out of the geographical centre of Tokyo.”

The phenomenon of the ‘career-changers’ is one we will explore further over coming months via a survey
of those who have made a mid-career move in Japan.
