Osaka Careers Attracting Tokyo-based Professionals

Osaka, August 31st, 2011 – According to Robert Walters Japan’s 2011 Market Update, the stability and career opportunities offered in Osaka and the Kinki region are attracting larger numbers of Tokyo-based professionals.

In wake of the March events in the Tohoku region, Kinki’s stability and infrastructure attracted companies and workers seeking to temporarily relocate away from the disruptions in Tokyo. Osaka’s traditionally stable pharmaceutical industry recruited aggressively through the first half of 2011, which contributed to an increase in the availability of jobs in the region. The generic industry in particular, added new headcount in response to ongoing government policies offering incentives for generic medicine use.

The update also reports that remuneration differences between Kanto and Kinki are becoming less of a factor for Tokyo-based professionals as job stability grows as a priority. With the opportunities for senior-level positions increasing in the region, Robert Walters anticipates the gradual movement of Tokyo-based professionals to Kinki to continue.

Other key findings indicate that:
– In late March and April, some companies temporarily moved their operations to branch offices or temporary offices in Osaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka
– The trend for manufacturing functions to outsource to more cost-competitive markets such as China and Korea continues
– The departure of a number of IT professionals from Japan resulted in an increase in technology replacement hiring

Nathaniel Pemberton, Manager of the Osaka office at Robert Walters, says:
“While it is still too early to determine what the future plans are for companies that temporarily relocated to Kinki, if a long-term move for all or part of their operations is decided, there will likely be pay rises to attract professionals from Tokyo-based operations and to retain their locally-based top performers. New investment into Kinki has also created career stability, as companies begin looking to decentralise responsibility out of the Tokyo-area.”
